DUBLIN -- Investigators in Bladen County suspect that a kerosene heater was responsible for a house fire this week
that killed an elderly couple.
Luther and Myrtle Inman died Sunday night after a fire completely destroyed their home on Old N.C. 87 in Dublin.
Firefighters from Duplin, Bladenboro, Elizabethtown and Tar Heel responded to the blaze at 10:30 p.m. Sunday. They
arrived to find the house engulfed in flames.
“The fire had already gone through the roof,” Bladen County Fire Marshal Mitchell Byrd said. “You could see flames go
20 to 30 feet in the air.”
Luther Inman, who was 74, was found in the kitchen. His wife, who was 77, was in the bedroom.
Byrd said a kerosene heater in the kitchen or propane gas from a heating system sparked the fire. He and the Bladen
County Sheriff’s Department are still investigating.
Luther Inman was the grandfather of Dublin Fire Chief Scott Inman and Dublin Public Works Director and volunteer
firefighter David Inman. Both men helped fight the fire, Byrd said.
