Massachusetts, Worcester, Feb. 3.
We hear from Pomfret, (Con.) that on the 26th January ult a
son of Mr. Joseph Inman, 19 years of age, was drowned. The father and son went
to fish on a pond in Killingsly, upon the ice, after fishing some time, not
meeting with good success, the son told his father, he would go in search after
a better place.--Putting on his skates for that purpose, he skated about 70 or
80 rods toward the other end of the pond, where unfortunately the ice was so
thin that his skates cut through and let him in, his father ran to his
assistance but by the time he got within five or fix rods, his son sunk, where
the water was about 38 feet deep.--The body was not found until the next day.

Tobacco heiress Doris Duke, 80
Telegram & Gazette Worcester, MA - October 29, 1993, Page: B6
BEVERLY HILLS, Calif. - Doris Duke, the tobacco heiress whose father's
fortune made her the
"richest girl in the world" and propelled her into an international circle of
celebrities, died yesterday.
She was 80.
Duke, whose family gave Duke University its name, died of a buildup of
fluid in the lungs, resulting in cardiac arrest, said Howard J. Rubenstein, a family
spokesman.
Her wealth was estimated this year at $750 million, 110th on Forbes
magazine's list of the nation's
richest.
Though Duke shunned the media and struggled to protect her privacy, her
life was fodder for the
gossip columns from the day in 1925 when her father died and left her most of his $300
million estate.
Six decades later, the media attention continued. In 1988, she posted
$5 million bail for her friend
Imelda Marcos, wife of the late Ferdinand Marcos. Mrs. Marcos was acquitted of federal
charges she helped her husband loot the Philippine treasury when he was president.
Duke was 12 when her father died in 1925 and left the bulk of his
estate to his only child. Most of the Duke millions came from the American Tobacco Co.,
the Duke Power Co. and real estate investments.
Duke led a sheltered life as a girl. That changed after her father's
death and her debut in 1930, when her world travels, romances and escapades became fodder
for gossip columnists.
Photographers dogged her, snapping pictures at nightclubs and lavish
parties, often with dashing
actors such as Errol Flynn and David Niven at her side.
Survivors include a nephew, Walker Inman Jr., and
cousins, Angier Biddle Duke, Anthony Newton Duke, Nicholas Benjamin Duke Biddle, Mary Duke
Biddle Trent Semans, E. Buchanan Lyon and Laura Elizabeth Lambert Lyon Smith.
