Regarding Christopher Inman, who was baptised 30 November 1748 at St Mary, Kingston-
upon-Hull, Yorkshire - there is some quite misleading information regarding him. I know it
was actually printed in Harry Speight's earlier edition (1894 or 1898) of his Nidderdale book; and I've no doubt that it is
simply being repeated - over and yet over again!
But this Christopher was an interesting character - he went bankrupt in 1771, and at that
time he was called Christopher Inman WHALEY - no doubt he had hoped to benefit from Uncle
Sam Whaley's extensive estate. The story told was that he went to "America in 1771,
and nothing more is
known of this branch". Maybe he did go to America in 1771, but if so, it was not a
permanent move, and was probably taken simply to avoid his creditors.......and there is
certainly lots more known about him; so I hope any Americans who are trying to link
themselves to this Christopher
in America aren't going to be too put out!!
At some later date his name became Christopher Inman Whaley BAYLES (bachelor uncle
Christopher BAYLES' fortune was now in his sights!), and under this name he appears in the
UK National Register of Archives, as a merchant, at Ostend in Belgium, the archive being
family & business correspondence and papers during the years 1770-1800. The only
problem with this is that the archive is now at an "Unknown location", and I've
not yet been able to trace it.
On 12 May 1786, at St Saviour, Jersey, Channel Islands, Christopher Inman Whaley BAYLES
married Marie GAUTIER (1763-1843). He died 8 October 1801, and left one son - Gascoign Noe
Edwin BAYLES of Guernsey, (1793-1861) married 11 Feb 1826, at St Peter Port, Channel
Islands, Charlotte GRUT (she d 1882). They had:
Louise Charlotte BAYLES
Grut BAYLES
Mary Gautier BAYLES
Rose Algeo BAYLES.
The first of these 4 children, Louise Charlotte married John Fisher Le PAGE of
Manchester and Cheadle MD. (both alive 1906). It was JF Le Page who compiled the 'Royal
Descent" pedigree mentioned on the title page of the AH Inman's 'Appendix'. The Le
Pages had four children:
John Herbert Perceval De Jersey Le PAGE
Florence Bertha Louise De Wilton LE PAGE
Ethel Mabel Beatrice De Jersey Le PAGE
Winifred Maud Mary Estelle Le PAGE.
